Argument Essay- Should a passing score on an English achievement test be the main requirement for international students to enter a university in an English-speaking country

Have you ever thinking of studying aboard or have you ever know what are one of the requirement for an international student who use English as a second language? I did have a chance to take a TOFEL test because it is the main requirement to enter a university in an English-speaking country. Some people said that the passing score on an English test can not measure the student's abilities in English, but I am disagree because of the following reasons.

The first reason is the sutdent needs to understant the lecture. All the lecture are given in English if the student does not understand English, they will not understand the lecture as well. Attending classes is important for a unversity student, it is a time that lecturer and students are discuss and exchange ideas.
Therefore, abilities to listening and speaking is very important for attending classroom.

The second reason why a student need a passing score is because when the class is done, there are assignments for student to be completed. The student may needs to go to the library, doing some research or interview, again that the student needs ability to read a book, write the assignments or communicate with others.

One last reason is a student's life outside the classroom, student needs to communicate the friends or others people. To communicate is how the student makes friends or student need to get along with other people. Also, sometime student might have questions or problems registering class, visa etc., student needs to speak with professors or officers.

However, some people are not agree with a passing score on an English acheivement test. For example, a TOFEL test which measure the student's abilities to read, write, listen and speak. Because the test is timed, some people are get nervous and they have no chance to go back and correct their mistakes. In addition, even a native English speaker could not get a full score for the test.

There are many good reasons why a student should get a passing score before attending the unversity. As there will be problems from not understanding the lectures, reading books, doing the assignments and communicate with professor, friends and others.

The Invention of Cell Phone

From the past until now cell phone or mobile plays very important part of people's life. We could not deny that mobile phone has changed people's life stlye. The history of mobile phone has been developed from time to time since the first invention by Martin Cooper in 1973. There are many advantages from the invention that why most people are now having mobile phone.

Mobile phone increase speed of communication. People spend less time and be communicate faster while using mobile phone. People can get connected at each other even when they are staying at different part of the world in just a minute. In the past, people use letter, telegram or massenger to send messages which can take hours or days. Also, it is taking the same time for the receiver to send the message back which can slow down or delay the communication.

There are multiple uses of mobile phone, mobile phone support a wide variety of service such as text messsge, MMS, email, internet accross short-range wireless communication (Infared, bluetooth). Also, mobile phone offers some business application and games for entertainment. Therefore, not even the benefit of communication, mobile phone also provide multiple uses for users. Unlike in the past, people only can send the message to the receivers.

Using mobile phone is independent. It is a device that the user have a wonderful convenience to keep in touch with other people. Before, there is a messenger to send message between sender and receiver or a device to translate the code into a message for the receiver.

There are many advantages from the invention of cell phone. Mobile phone shorter the time and make it easier for people to communicate. We can say that the invention of cell phone can make the world smaller.

The differences between US and my country

There are many differences between the US and my country. As I am come from different part of the world, the time is totally different. We are 12 hours apart. Food is also very different, Thai people have rice as a main part of each meal but US people do not. They instead having bread, chesse or fried. I sometime have pizzas or burgers at my country but here most people have it everyday. Chesses are not so popular for Thai people but it does here. The weather is one of the big different between my country and here. We never have snow, winter or even autume season. There are only two seasons in my home country; summer and rainy seasons. It is a scary weather especially when it is snow. Sometime the temperature is going below 0 celcus. Moreover, the culture here is different than Thai culture too. American family is small but in Thailand most of them are big. We like living together with grandparents, granddaughters or grandsons. Young American people after they are 18 or 20 usually they like to move out and live by their own. I would say Thai family are closer.

Time that I felt proud of myself

Have you ever be prouded of yourself ? Somebody have asked me this question before, I would say "yes". Since I was borned until where I am right now, I have one very important experience in my life that I feel so proud of myself and I feel that I would never forget for the rest of my life.

It was happened after my gratuation which was eight years ago. I was looking for a job at that time, I could not figure out what kind of job do I like. I just wanted the job which related to my education. It has been almost a year that I wasted my time finding what I like or what I wanted to be. Finally, a friend of my ask me to invest in a business. It was a restaurant business. Although it was a small one but I made it. Some people think I was too young but I though If I am not going to make it or if I lose money, I still have time to fight again. I was thinking for a while then started  asking people who has experience to get some idea to start. I did not have any connection about reataurant business but my friend did. We did everything by ourselves from the very start. Anyway, I did need some help about some paper works since I was too you and did have any credit to do business.

Me and my partnver, we started from repainting and changing some furnitures in the restaurant. We went to the second handed furniture store and tried to mix and match. It was not bad for a starter. We planed what to put on the menu and created some new items, also setting the price and running promotions. I was realized how marketing is important to a business. Everything was really really tough for us at the beginning, there was a time that we were so despaired and think that we have made that wrong desicion.Everyday, there were problems and we have learned how and when to solved them. My patience has been built up and I am being more mature because I gained experiences and I am tougher. I have learned how to deal with people or difficult customers, I have learned how to maintain qualities but make profit so that I can stay in a business etc. However, I was doing it for about three years until I made another important decision to come here to finish Master Degrss. I hope this will help my in my future career or business more or less.

Finally, this is the most important that I feel so proud of myself and I have to thank my family for support. I think this experince teach me some many things. I wish that I could use them in the next future.

Holloween Experince

When talking about Halloween, I do not have much experience about this holiday. As I come from Southeast Asia, we do not celebrate Holloween's day. In my imagination, it is a day that people dress up like death people, they put lots of make up or some people ware masks on their face. Anyway, since I have been to America, it give me more ideas about what is a Halloween Day and how do people celebrate it here. Most people decorated their house with pumkins and scary death people. Some make their house look like hunted house with ghosts. Many  kids like this holiday as they can dress up with costum, carry pillow cases and get to houses one by one asking for some treats. The house owners give kids some candy.

Festival or Celebration in my culture.

One of the most famous and well-known festival in my culture is "Songkran" or "Water-splashing festival".  Every year it takes place on April 13th-15th and it is a national celebration. Thai people believe that this event is important because this water festival marks the beginning of the traditional Thai new year. We think that it is a good opportunity for merit-making and a special time to have fun, traditional music, dance games etc.

In term of meaning, Songkran  means the festival  celebrated  on  the  day  of  passage of  the  sun  to  Aries, the  first  sign  of  the Zodiac. It  means  that  on  Songkran  Day  the  sun  enter the  sign  of  Aires. Thai people believe that Songkran's Day was held to welcome the sun that gave both light and warmth to the earth.

Activities that people usually do is going to the temples in the morning, give food to the monk and pray. Visiting parent or going back home to stay with family is one of the most important thing that people do. Some people are away from family and working in capital city, it is a family reunion. People usually play water in late afternoon, it is like water fighting. It is a highlight of Songkran's Day.

Autumn/ Fall

 

 

I have been living here in the U.S for four years. Unlike the U.S, Thailand autumn is not exsist. There are only summer and rainny seasons. Autumn is a preparing season before snowing, it is a transition from summer to winter. My first autumn was nice even though it is a little strenght for me. The weather is a little too cold because I was getting used to summer. I have to buy new jacket to make sure it is warm enough and to be ready for the coming winter. The night is getting dark so early and I feel like I have less than 24 hours a day. There are not too much sun light during autumn. I did took lots of picture of trees, it is amazing that all trees are changing their color from green to yellow, red  or orange at the same time and finally they all fall down in winter. I like those colors so much, it gives me so many feeling. However, I sometime feel like homesick and lonely during autumn. There are not so many activities I do in autumn. I go out for a walk, take some beautiful pictures and send them to my family and friends.
